How to Eat Healthy Even on Budget

If you ever believed that eating healthy is too expensive, then you’re not alone. Healthy options always seem to cost more and when you’re struggling to make the ends meet, even a single dollar can make a huge difference. Still, the cost of eating healthy food shouldn’t come in between you and your health. To help you with that, here’s how you can eat healthy while saving your hard-earned cash.

eat healthy!

  1. Create a grocery list and a weekly meal plan.

First thing’s first: Set an extra time each week to create your meal plan and grocery list. Doing this will ensure that you’ll only buy what you need without spending money on things that’ll just go to waste. But before you start with your grocery and meal planning you should first…

  1. Check out food sales and know what foods are in season.

Check the website of your favourite grocery store to see what foods are on sale this week so you’ll be able to plan your meals accordingly. Consider goods that are in season, and if possible, buy local to cut back on your cost.

  1. Consider goods that are marked down.

Most grocery stores in Singapore have a dedicated area for foods that are marked down as they approach their expiration date. Don’t be afraid of purchasing and eating these products. If you’re going to eat or freeze the products within the next few days, then consider taking the deal the next time you take a trip to the grocery store.

  1. Opt for non-animal protein sources.

Meat is a good source of protein, but it can be really expensive. So instead of having meat as your primary protein source, opt for plant-based sources like beans, chickpeas, and lentils. They can be used in different and delicious ways, and are super affordable. With this, you can already get your daily dose of protein without spending too much.

  1. Purchase seeds, nuts and spices in bulk.

It’s no secret that you get more bang for your buck when you purchase ingredients in bulk. Most grocery stores have a section for bulk foods where you can buy as much or as little as you want.

  1. Buy frozen vegetables and fruits.

A lot of fruits and veggies can be pricey, especially if they’re out of season. So instead of purchasing fresh fruits, opt for the frozen ones. Not only are frozen goods cheaper, you can also store them for as long as you want without having to worry about it going bad.

  1. Make the most out of your freezer.

Your freezer might just be one of the under-appreciated, most underestimated, and overlooked appliance in your kitchen. Make the shelf life of your goods longer by freezing them before they go bad. Freeze fresh or leftover foods like burgers, soups, or salad dressings

  1. Repurpose your leftovers and place them in proper storage containers.

Don’t throw your leftovers in the garbage! Instead, toss them into a clean container and eat them the following day. If you want, you can get creative with your leftovers and repurpose them into a wrap, a salad or a soup ingredient. Just ensure that you use proper storage containers to make your repurposed dish last longer.

  1. Avoid purchasing expensive drinks.

One of the easiest ways to save some bucks and improve your health is to stick with drinking water instead of expensive, sugary drinks. Add some kick and flavour to your good old water by infusing it with berries, cucumber, lemon, melon or mint.

  1. Be organized and avoid unnecessary trips to grocery stores.

If you’re smart with grocery shopping and meal planning, then you should only need to visit the supermarket once, or twice a week. Before making another trip to the grocery store, ask yourself if you really need to go there. Keep your cupboards, freezer, fridge and pantry organized so you’ll know what products you have on hand, as well as to avoid purchasing stuff that you don’t need.

Eating healthy doesn’t always need to expensive. All you’ve got to do is be smart in planning your meals and groceries, and you’ll definitely be able to enjoy healthy and budget-friendly meals.

Body Detox: Signs That You Need It and Ways to Do It

The word ‘detox’ seems to have subtly made its way into our daily language. These days, it’s become common to hear someone detoxing, whether by doing yoga, juicing or only eating vegetables – and perhaps you may need to join the detox bandwagon. Just look for these simple signs to know whether or not you need to try this health fad.

Signs a Body Detox is Necessary

  1. Lack of Energy

If you’re consistently getting a 7- to 8-hour sleep, but you still doesn’t feel rested, then it might be time to consider getting a detox. The junk that builds up in your system, such as the foods you eat and the air you breathe, is what zaps your energy. By detoxing, you allow your body to flush out these substances, making you feel more energetic. As you detoxify your body, it’s also best to stop drinking coffee and other caffeinated drinks. Not only will these drinks make you feel sluggish, it’ll also leave you crashing once the ‘high’ is over.

  1. Severe Difficulty in Concentrating

Ever find yourself having a difficult time focusing on a task at hand? Then this could be a detox red flag. Apart from concentration problems, having excessive candida fungus in your body also triggers health problems like eczema, yeast infection, and digestive issues. So make it a point to perform a candida cleanse to restore your mind’s concentration and focus.

  1. Problem Losing Weight

Having problems losing weight, despite exercising hard, is another sign that you should go on a body detox. Get rid of the toxins in your body by consuming fresh salad with ingredients like alfalfa sprouts, avocado, carrots, chia seeds, cucumbers, quinoa, spinach, and tomatoes. Also, make your own salad dressing using olive oil, lemon, citrus, fresh herbs, and salt and pepper to have a tasty dressing sans all the artificial colours and flavours. In the process of flushing out the toxins from your body, expect that you’ll drop a few pounds so make sure that you eat a more balanced diet.

  1. Skin Problems

Ever experienced having rashes or acne breakouts for no apparent reason? If so, you may need to look inward to discover why your skin is going through such changes. Are you drinking lots of water? Have you been eating lots of processed foods lately? Are you overindulging in nicotine or alcohol? Are you exposed in an environment where moulds are present, and you breathe in airborne toxins?

If you answer to all of these is yes, then consider undergoing a body detox for a short period of time to see if the symptoms lessen. Excessive toxins in the bodyoften causes skin problems, so try spending lesser time on places that expose you to such toxins.

  1. Difficulty in Sleeping

When our body is loaded with toxins, it struggles to efficiently carry out some of its natural functions. In this case, toxin build-ups make the body produce less melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wake cycle. When your body struggles to properly produce this hormone, your sleep cycle becomes thrown off, causing you to find it difficult to fall or stay asleep. Fortunately, going on a body detox can easily fix this problem. Detoxing allows your body to be more in tune with nature and work in its natural state, which then helps in creating a healthy circadian rhythm.

How to Perform a Body Detox

Some of the easy ways to detoxify your body is to steer clear from the harmful chemicals in your household products, and avoid consuming foods with artificial additives. Doing yoga is another wonderful and easy way of having a body detox as it allows every part of the body to compress, stretch and twist. Such movements facilitate the removal of waste products from the tissues and extremities of the body that a simple jog and bike ride in your area in Singapore can’t reach.

It’s no wonder that detoxifying became a part of our daily language. The process offers a great deal of benefits for our mind, body and soul that it became a word known for health and happiness.

What Your Engagement Ring Says About You

Every love is precious and rare, and a woman’s ring is the perfect way to showcase that. If you really want to know more about a woman’s personality—and love life—notice her engagement ring. These could be the meaning behind every ring style you’ll see on someone’s hand:

1. Round Cut

A round cut diamond symbolizes traditional values in love and romance. These traditional brides-to-be would want everything to be classic—A-line wedding dress, cathedral-length veil, and her mother’s brooch pinned on her bouquet. Talking about personality? They are dependable and thoughtful, with their loved ones as top priority.

2. Princess Cut

A princess cut diamond features a classic shape with a little something extra, making it a popular choice among classic-modern Singapore brides. You can expect to see her in a white pantsuit instead of a traditional wedding gown or have her wedding in an unexpected venue, like art galleries and rooftop pools or gardens. Many brides love the these types of beautiful engagement rings for lifetime in Singapore as it is a classic cut. Creative and daring spirit is most likely the reason why her groom is lured to her magnificence.

3. Emerald Cut

A woman who wears an emerald engagement ring is more likely drawn to subtle elegance. It symbolizes a more modified style, and those who choose this stone cut tend to be well organized and decisive. These brides could be wearing a sheath dress and walking down the aisle with a charming bouquet of lilies for that effortless chic look.

4. Marquise

Named after Marquise De Pompadour, the mistress of France’s King Louis XV, there’s no wonder that this ring is for women oozing with major sex appeal. While it is not the most practical stone shape for a ring because it can easily get caught on clothing and other stuff, it’s still among the most popular choices especially for brides with strong personality.

5. Cushion Cut

While tradition is important for these brides, they also appreciate a twist of uniqueness in every aspect. We bet she would be wearing a sophisticated mermaid gown, but paired with stark blue killer heels. It’s also safe to say that the wedding will be heavy on glamour—crystal brooches on bouquets, sparkly bridesmaid dresses, and champagne towers are your thing.

6. Coloured Ring

Coloured rings are unique, and so does the wearer of the ring in Singapore. The bride loves doing things her way, so expect to see unconventional wedding dress, perhaps with a touch of quirky embellishments or a splash of vibrant colour. And if anyone in the office is going to throw an amazing wedding party in an exotic destination, it’s going to be her.

7. Oval Shape

An oval shape stone is for the bride who has that soft, feminine character, and likes everything to be classic but with a twist. A hard working career woman at day, but lets her hair down at night. This elegant shape is a favourite among brides not only because of its sophisticated look, but also with because of its sparkle that’s comparable to a classic round cut diamond.

8. Heart Shape

Brides who prefer this stone shape likely have fairytale-like views about love and romance. The heart is the ultimate symbol of love for these brides, and they take pride for having that beautiful relationship with their partner. However, this may not be the best choice for brides who tend to shy away from the spotlight, as this exquisite shape will surely attract attention.

9. Pear Shape

This shape is preferred by romantic and gentle-natured brides, but those who also exhibit independent values. Balance and symmetry rule their lives, and they expect the same from people around them.

An engagement ring is a personal choice. And even if brides don’t realize it, they are drawn to certain wedding ring styles for some unexplainable reason. This reason could be because the style of the ring reflects their preferences and personality, and thus appeals to them much more than any other styles. So if you want to know more about a friend’s character and style, her proposal ring speaks volumes of it.

4 Ways to Lessen Your Kitchen Waste

Our trashcans, fridges and garbage disposals are filled with bones, crusts, peels and expired food day after day. Some of us are smart enough to have compost piles in their backyard, but most of us don’t and that’s what causes massive quantities of food to be thrown away daily. Luckily, you can now cut down on your waste – and save some money – by using the following tasty kitchen hacks.

  1. Make a tasty vegetable stock out of you leftover produce.

Save all the peels, skins, and stems of the vegetables that you used for your roasts, salad, stews and soups. Set these leftovers aside on a re-sealable bag or a big bowl covered with plastic wrap, and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to cook a veggie stock out of it. Just avoid keeping it in the fridge for too long though, since these scraps can quickly rot and growing moulds in your leftovers will defeat your purpose of saving it and recooking it into a tasty stock.

Homemade vegetable stock contains lots of nutrients and can even be used as a base for sauces or soups. If you want, you can even drink it on its own – it’s really that good! In fact, you can even use it as replacement for the water you use when preparing rice. Preserve your veggie stock by storing it well in the freezer.

  1. Cook a tasty broth using the leftover bones on your meals or parties.

Just like with vegetable stock, bone broth is also delicious and nutritious, and serves as a great way to savour every last bit of goodness from the leftover bones. Fish bones and heads are the easiest to recook into a savoury broth. Simply add the leftover bones into a stockpot of water, and bring it to boil. After that, strain the broth carefully until it’s free from all the pointy fish bones.

Leftover turkey and chicken bones can be used as well. Just toss a few handful of herbs like parsley, rosemary, sage and thyme as you cook your broth to make it even tastier. Apart from the chicken and fish bones, beef bones also make a delicious broth. This can be a bit complicated though, since larger beef bones need to be broken down so that you’ll get the flavourful and nutritious stuff into your stock.

Just remember to keep an eye to your bone broth as you cook it, and make sure that you skim off the scum that rises as the broth cooks. Don’t wait to do this until you’re done cooking, or you’ll just let it fall back into the bottom of your pot.

  1. Turn your stale bagel and bread into tasty desserts.

Although I wasn’t one to request that the crusts of my bread be cut off as a kid, I’m not a huge fan of tough crusts and end pieces of bread today. Instead, I save these unwanted ends of stale bread in a reusable bag and place them in the freezer.

Whenever I’m making a recipe that requires breadcrumbs, I simply pull out a few pieces of frozen bread and crush them in the food processor until they turn into crumbs. A quick way of doing this is to give them a spin while they’re still frozen. For larger bread slices, I turn them into a delicious homemade bread pudding.

If you ever find yourself with lots of extra bagels instead, here’s a simple and tasty solution for that. Slice your stale bagels as thinly as possible, place them on a cookie sheet, drizzle with olive oil, and toast until they turn into brown bagel chips. Sprinkle the chips with sea salt, and serve it with whipped cream cheese.

  1. Save your overripe bananas by making delicious banana breads.

In some ways, bananas are considered the perfect food: sweet and soft, jam-packed with potassium and other nutrients that the body needs. Finding a perfect banana, however, is a more complicated feat since it requires much skill, and finding one is just imperfect science.

So rather than throwing away your overripe bananas, save them in a clean freezer bag and use them to make a delicious banana bread. Just remember to keep your bag of chocolate chips and walnuts on hand at all times, so you’ll be ready to make a batch whenever you get to collect enough bananas. Overripe bananas may look gross, but once they’re baked into a banana bread, they’ll definitely tasted amazing!

Now that you’ve absorbed all the clever food-saving tips as shared by some Singapore food experts and chefs, it’s now time to start cooking, eating and reducing food waste!

Must-Try Healthy Juice Drinks for the Post-Festive Season

Feeling like you’ve overindulged during the year-end festivities? Thinking of treating your body to healthier options somehow? If so, then here are five delicious and healthy juices that you’ll surely enjoy, and will help you get over the guilt of last year’s overindulgence.

  1. Avocado Chocolate Juice

You read it right. Apart from incorporating it into your beauty regimen and making guacamoles out of avocados, you can also enjoy this green fruit by making healthy and tasty juices. Containing more potassium than bananas, and rich on protein, you’d definitely want to have an avocado juice as your breakfast or lunch drink.

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • pinch of salt
  • chocolate syrup

  1. Add in milk, avocado and a pinch of salt into the blender, and blend it until smooth.

Tip: If your blender is capable of blending ice, you may want to add a few ice cubes into the juice to make it less thick.

  1. Banana Lime Yogurt Smoothie

The first time I had this drink was when a university friend made it for me. Since then, I already loved banana lime milkshakes, and thought of it as a great light meal substitute for during snack or lunch time. Here’s my version of banana lime yogurt smoothie.

  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1 banana, thinly chopped
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Simply blend all the ingredients together. Serve and enjoy.

  1. Carrot Milk Juice

For some odd reason, some eateries in my hometown in Singapore started serving this drink as a part of their menu when I was around nine years old. I loved the drink since then and had never gotten bored of it ever. Carrots are full of vitamins so you can’t really say that it’s a bad drink to love and be addicted to.

  • 1 medium-sized carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Just blend all the ingredients together, until no traces of carrots are visible.
  2. If you want to turn it into a more summery drink, add some ice cubes to make a frappe out of this tasty drink.

  1. Mango Yogurt Drink

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Indian Mango Lassi at many Indian restaurants in Singapore, so I decided to make my own version of the healthy and tasty mango yogurt drink.

  • 1 cup ripened and chopped mangoes
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup low-fat milk
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Blend all the aforementioned ingredients together, and you’ll get a yummy smoothie that you’ll definitely enjoy.

  1. Pineapple Coconut Milk Juice

Pineapples are known to be great antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. The fruit even contains bromelain which aids in improving one’s digestion. By blending it with coconut milk, you’ll avoid getting the usual cuddling of dairy products when they’re combined with acidic fruit juices like pineapple juice. Other than that, the coconut milk also gives the drink a distinctive taste that might trick you into thinking that you’re drinking an actual piña colada.

  • 1 cup of chopped pineapples
  • ⅓ cup coconut milk
  • ¾ cup low-fat milk
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Blend all of the ingredients together.
  2. If you want to turn it into a more summer drink, simply add a few ice cubes to make a frappe out of the drink.

Tip: Add a small pinch of cinnamon powder on top before serving to give the drink some extra flavour.

Now that you know what drinks to try, I truly hope that the aforementioned drinks will be able to kill the guilt you might be having for indulging into your guilty pleasures during the year-end celebrations that you attended. The best part about these drinks is they’re easy to make, and just delicious to drink. So what’s not to like about these refreshing juices? None.

The Health Benefits of Reclining Chairs

In terms of furniture, you only see it as useful in the conduct of everyday lives however, you do not think beyond what it can offer. Take the reclining chairs for example. You have to know that reclining chairs present health benefits aside from aesthetic value. Recliners benefit the body in more ways that you can think of. The good news is that there are many choices here in Singapore that you can consider.

Here are the health benefits of reclining chairs:

  • It can relieve stress: There are many triggers of stress and sometimes, you do not know it. The thing is, stress is only a state of mind but it can exacerbate any health conditions if you let it control your life. The trick here is to look for stress relievers. It may be as complicated as going abroad to travel or as simple as buying a reclining chair. Doctors highly recommend that you take an hour rest outside the bedroom and reclining chairs can help you with that task. Resting can alleviate stress and it will manifest in your health.
  • It can reduce pregnancy pain: When women are pregnant, it is hard to go about everyday life comfortably – the aching joints, swollen ankles and tight fingers make things hard. Many pregnant women consider lying down but if it is for a long time, the pains and aches intensify. The best course of action is to sleep in a recliner. Though not all prefers this.

  • It can lessen achy joints: It is indeed inconvenient and painful to endure stiff and swollen joints. Recliners can help these people since it can facilitate better circulation and angle the joins properly. For people who are suffering from arthritis, a recliner chair can be a great help.

If you are still not convinced to consider reclining chair, perhaps you have to stick with your typical sofa or your ottoman. This kind of furniture is a bit bulky and they can consume a lot of space. Whatever you choose, the important thing is you are comfortable at the end of the day.

Essentials for the Today’s Techie Guy

The world is increasingly being dominated by technological, perhaps most notably through compact gadgets and devices. Generally, men are more inclined towards technology compared to women so it’s not so odd to see guys having more tech gadgets than their female counterparts. So if you’re a guy who is into techy stuff and gadgets, here are some essentials for you.

  1. Google ChromeCast

This gadget is for people who are fond of watching films, videos, televisions series, and music on their phones, tablets, and other handheld gadgets. How does it work? Well, ChromeCast is basically a medium that beams any type of video or music you have in your smartphone onto your television or home stereo through wireless Internet connection. It’s an interesting investment because you no longer have to suffer watching films on such small smartphone screens.

  1. iPad Pro

This iPad is basically the same as the first iPad, its later incarnations, and the iPad Air. However, this one packs a lot more computing and processing power than its predecessors. With a 64-bit A9X chip, the iPad Pro has the equivalent power of a midlevel laptop. So why not bring a laptop instead? The iPad Pro is only 0.27 inches slim and 1.5 lbs. light. So imagine having a device with the power of a laptop but as thin and light as a tablet.

  1. Beats Studio Wireless Headphones

Wireless headphones are now increasingly become more popular than their wired counterparts. The Beats Studio Wireless is one of the best out there because it delivers sound quality similar to regular headphones with wires. It also has noise cancelling and can last up to 12 hours per charging. The sad part of is the hefty price tag of almost 400 USD. But we believe you get the bang out of your buck with this gadget.

  1. Amazon Echo

What We Know About “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

The J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter film and book series has a wide following around the world. Unsurprisingly, fans would likely clamor for more of Rowling’s works. Enter the film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, which is based on the book of the same title. It might be a long while ‘til the movie gets released. In the meantime, here are some quick facts about it.

It’s Not a Solo Heroes Act

Much like the Harry Potter series, which was centered around three heroes, this new film will revolve around the stories of four characters namely Newt, Queenie, Tina, and Jacob. However, much like the Potter series, which featured Harry as the main hero, Fantastic Beasts will also be featuring Newt Scamander as its main protagonist.

It’s Set in the USA

While Harry Potter was set in London, England in the 1990’s, Fantastic Beasts goes Westside in the USA specifically in New York. Moreover, the film pushes back time and will be set during mid 1920’s at the start of the Great Depression. Specifics are yet to be released. All we can do now is to speculate several possible magical world similarities between New York and London especially on where the American witches and wizards go to school.

Magic is a Lot More Secretive

While a handful of muggles (non-magic people) in the Harry Potter series are aware of the existence of the magical side of the world, Fantastic Beasts setting is actually more secretive about the magic especially due to the historical events such as the Salem Witch Trials. In this new film, a group of muggles known as the Second Salemers seeks to hunt down and expose the wizarding and witching world, which is historically similar, again, to the Salem Witch Trials.

Say Goodbye to the Legendary Trio

Since the film is set about 70 years prior to the events of Harry Potter, it is very unlikely that Harry, Ron, and Hermione will be making appearances in the film especially because they, and even their parents, haven’t been born yet and because it’s set far away from England. So nostalgia might be out of the question here. But, who knows? They might make cameos perhaps in glimpses of the future.

Hair: A Woman’s Crowning Glory

When we hear of crowns, we think of a queen. We do not have a queen here in Singapore but we surely know what a crown looks like and what it stands for. Alternatively, crown also refers to a woman’s hair. The hair itself is our tiara and we do our best to take good care of it. Like the crown, our hair is our glory.

Speaking of hair, there are different hairstyles that we can consider. Gone were the days of plain ponytails and braids. We have now twisted hairstyles that will surely keep our main in superb shape from day till night. We first saw the trend of braided hairs at fashion shows. The models look divine with their hairs. It is not wrong if we decide to have different looks.

So, here are some braided hairstyles that we can consider:

Our crown jewel: To do this, we have to part the hair first at the center and isolate the back and front section. This is the basic braid.  We have to take the left portion of the front section and form the braid which will start from the temple. We can secure this braid using an elastic band. We have to do same on the right side. This basic braid is considered for those who want a clean and neat look. If we do not want to look like a school-girl, we can slightly loosen the braids.

The twisted metal: If we want a twisted metal style, we should first tie the back section of our hair into low ponytail. Before actually braiding it, we have to apply styling mousse. The styling mousse will get our waves to last longer. After applying, we should split the ponytail into two and twist each section before crossing it to the other side. We should do this alternately until we achieve a full rope braid. We should not forget to secure it by using an elastic band.

Our runway remix: If we have a night out after work, we should consider the runway remix style. First, we need to make a rope-braid-ponytail. This will serve as our head band. After that, we remove the elastic bad at the end of our hair and run our fingers through the back to remove the tangles and at the same time to create volume and viola – we have a polished look fit for party.

These braided hairstyles will surely give life to our hairs. We have to remember though that no matter the hairstyle, we have to be confident when we wear it. There are other hairstyles that we can consider, we only need to be open for the possibilities.
